Associate Mechanical Engineer


Ted Pella, Inc. is seeking an Associate Mechanical Engineer to assist in the mechanical design and development of new and existing products, including instruments, as well as small parts and supplies. This position reports to the Engineering Manager.

Job Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design, construct, and test mechanical prototypes and test beds.
  • Contribute to bringing products from idea, to proof of concept, through to the final, ready to manufacture product.
  • Assist in the design, development, integration and testing of all aspects of mechanical components, equipment, and instrumentation.
  • Apply knowledge of engineering principles to design products such as instruments, controls, robots, machines, etc.
  • May be involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical products. Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Provide Sustaining Engineering support on existing products and instruments.
  • Provide support to internal staff in Manufacturing, Thin Film Lab and Customer Service.
  • Rely on education, experience and judgment to plan and accomplish department and corporate goals.
  • Work in conjunction with other department Mechanical Engineering staff to perform a variety of complicated tasks.
  • Contribute to regular technical reviews throughout the product development process.
  • Contribute to concept generation and ideation processes.
  • Interface with internal and external customers to design new products and support existing products.
  • Analyze root cause and corrective action of line yield, field failures, safety, and manufacturing issues.
  • Collaborate with other staff on related product issues and development.
  • Maintain and protect the confidentiality of proprietary information.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering required.
  • 0 - 2 years of mechanical design engineering experience. Must have some practical hands-on industry experience.
  • Experience with development of scientific instrumentation as well as smaller items.
  • CAD experience required; SolidWorks strongly preferred.
  • Solid experience with a recent version of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work in mechanical design within multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Ability to demonstrate mechanical design aptitude.
  • Problem diagnosis and solving skills. A high level of attention to detail and accuracy is required.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills in collaborating with co-workers and clients.
  • Results-oriented self-starting nature, with a demonstrated track record of success.
  • A passion for delivering engineering excellence.
  • Technical experience preferred includes a broad range of product development with sound expertise in one or more areas:
    • Mechanical Engineering.
    • Control systems and automation.
    • Materials science.
    • Interfaces to electrical and software components and controls.
    • Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFM & DFA), observe and recommend procedures, assembly jigs and training for Manufacturing efficiency.
    • Understanding of Design Qualification (DQ) and Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) process.
    • Vacuum technology experience is preferred. 
    • Low and high-volume manufacturing environments.
  • Experience in product and process engineering support.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment, learn new things quickly, handle multiple tasks, and prioritize responsibly.
  • Strong attendance record and work ethic, and maintain a positive attitude at all times.

Hours:

Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; additional hours may be necessary as needed.

Salary & Benefits:

The annual salary range is $60,840 - $84,760 plus an excellent benefit package. Competitive pay rate will be commensurate with experience. Benefits include a generous medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans, a 401(k) plan with Company match, paid vacation, sick leave, and 10 paid holidays.
