Glass Bottom Dishes are used in the fields of Life Science and Environmental Research, Molecular and Cell Biology, Cell Culture and Cell Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurology, Pathology, Pharmacology and more.

These sterile tissue culture grade polystyrene glass bottom WillCo Wells Petri dishes with lid are available in two sizes, with clear or black plastic sidewalls. Through their advanced design features, they provide exceptional image quality needed for use on inverted microscopes for applications such as high resolution image analysis, microinjection and electro-physiology recording of fluorescent-tagged cells.

The glass bottom WillCo Wells Petri dish uses a special formulated adhesive with a low toxicity that is durable and optically clear. Glass thickness stays within 0.17 ±0.01mm and permits use of immersion objectives with water, glycerin or oil. The glass bottom is flush with the microscope stage or heating stage to ensure high stability and optimum heat exchange. The optical quality of the glass bottom provides a higher effective numerical aperture producing brighter high resolution images in all types of microscopy applications.

The glass bottom WillCo Wells Petri dish features a low rim side wall. The low side wall allows easier access for micromanipulation/microinjection probes. The Glass bottom Willco Well Petri dish is available in two sizes: 35mm diameter and 50mm diameter. Both sizes are available with clear or black side walls.

The 35mm dish has outside dimensions similar to that of a Corning® 35mm dish and will be compatible with most 35mm heaters and perfusion adapters.

The 50mm dish has a well of 35mm providing a large growth area. It has a low access angle and grips for easy handling.

Advantages:

    Microscope light passes through the bottom glass in a perpendicular way, glass rests on stage

  • Direct heating from the microscope-stage, because the glass is in direct contact (flush) with stage

  • In IVF, no more oocyte-/embryo transfer is needed from one plastic dish to another, unless different media are being used, saving a lot of time

NEW Glass Bottom Dish Assembly Kit

Build your own Glass Bottom Dishes and save 55% or more compared to the pre-assembled product.

This easy do-it-yourself kit is available in two dish sizes and four bottom aperture sizes, with clear or black walls and lids. Each kit includes 500 dishes and lids, 500 top quality (SCHOTT) round glass coverslips of corresponding size, 500 double-sided adhesive rings, a set of tweezers and a pair of protective latex gloves. Special two-part Assembly Device (available separately) made of high quality anodized aluminum serves to precisely position the adhesive ring and the glass coverslip bottom and evenly distribute the gluing pressure.

The assembly routine is very simple and clean, it does not involve messy glues or the need for precise aim and motor skill. A ring of matching diameter carrying the specially formulated adhesive is peeled off its backing and mounted onto the blue part of the Assembly Device. The dish bottom, guided precisely by the top protrusion of the Device, is then pressed firmly on top of the ring. This achieves transfer of just the right amount of the adhesive onto the dish bottom. The now sticky dish is pressed against the corresponding glass bottom, which has been secured within the special slot in the red part of the assembly device. After four hours at room temperature to allow the bonding to complete, the newly made glass bottom dish is ready to use. Detailed assembly instructions are included with each kit.

Each kit is supplied with #1.5 thickness coverslip glass bottoms, unless specified as #1 when placing the order (custom).

NEW Assembly Device for Glass Bottom Dish Kit

The Assembly Device is a set of two high quality tools precision-machined from anodized aluminum. It serves to precisely position the adhesive ring and the glass coverslip bottom and evenly distribute the gluing pressure. A separate Assembly Device is offered for each bottom aperture size: 12mm and 22mm Devices for the 35mm dish size, larger-sized 30mm and 40mm devices for the 50mm dish size.

Technical Information for Clear Wall and Black Wall PELCO® Glass Bottom Dishes
Positioning Embryos / Life Cells

Our Glass Bottom Dishes are non-cytotoxic and non-pyrogenic. However, there is always a risk of positioning embryos / life cells on or even close to the edge, where the adhesive ring is in direct contact with the media inside the dish. Therefore, it is our advice to use a position for cells, close to the center of the bottom glass (e.g. as in Figure 1).

Note: Our Glass Bottomed Dishes have passed many tests, including cytotoxicity tests. They are “non-cytotoxic” and “non-pyrogenic”.
They have passed tests with “hatched” blastocyst (mouse) embryos, showing that they are safe, when embryo’s cells are positioned in the center of the glass bottom.

Warning: Embryos, specifically “hatched” blastocyst (mouse) embryos are extremely sensitive. Therefore, we adivise all users of our Glass Bottom Dishes to be aware of the fact that they consist of:
  1. A polystyrene ring and lid (non-cytotoxic);
  2. Adhesive! (Considered cytotoxic if in close contact for more than 30 minutes);
  3. Cover glass bottom (non-cytotoxic).

Although manufacturers of “adhesives” have shown certificates confirming “non-cytotoxicity” and our Glass Bottom Dishes passed biological tests for “non-cytoxicity” — tested in a “Laboratory for Medical Device Evaluation” — it is our advice to position life cells in the center of the glass.
Position all embryos/eggs in the center of the glass bottom, as indicated in Figure 1, within a small circle or in a small square. Do not use paraffin-oil to cover the droplets!



Explanation of Figure 1:
Embryos/eggs (/:3) should be positioned on the glass bottom as indicated in Figure 1.

No producer/manufacturer (of e.g. Adhesives or polystyrene) guarantees the life of (hatched) embryos/cells when positioned directly on, or close to the adhesive seal (2).

Since the glass proved to be non-cytotoxic for “hatched blastocyst” mouse embryos, over a period of six (6) days, it is our advice to use the positioning, for the maximum of eight embryos, as in Figure 1.

  1. Outer diameter of the dish: Ø50mm.
  2. Outer diameter of the glass surface, inside the dish: Ø39mm.
  3. Black bullets (8) and smallest circles (4) of the same size: embryo(s)/eggs.
  4. Center of the glass bottom, with embryos:
    • Within small circle Ø15mm (4 black bullets and 4 small circles).
    • Within square of 15mm x 15mm (black bullets)
      the center (4) is also a good location for the sperm cells
  5. Distance from adhesive (2), on the outer edge of the inner glass surface, to the embryo/egg:
    = 10mm minimum.
     
Explanation of Figure 2:
In Figure 2, we show an example of several positions of embryos (/:3) or eggs that are being used for examination, of which it is our advice, never to use these positions because these cells are or may be sensitive to all existing “Medical Class VI” adhesives.

Note: It is our advice, NOT to position an embryo or an egg, inside the dish as show in Figure 2, close to ring 2.

The clear area, between 1 and 2, is the polystyrene bottom ring, to which the glass is bonded, using a “non-cytotoxic” adhesive.

  1. Outer diameter of the dish: Ø50mm.
  2. Outer diameter of the glass surface inside the dish: Ø39mm
  3. Black bullets (8): Embryo(s)/eggs.
  4. Center of the glass bottom, where the embryos should be.
  5. Distance from adhesive (2), on the outer edge of the inner glass surface, to the embryos/eggs:
    = 10mm minimum.
