Only ALKAR glass strips are made from Pittsburgh glass. Most other strips are manufactured from glass made by the float process. These two types of glass are really very different.

The float process produces flat sheets suitable for windows and mirrors, but the glass is softer and variable for routine knifemaking. It is produced by floating molten glass on a bed of molten metal. The upper side is exposed to different temperatures resulting in different physical characteristics in the upper and lower surfaces.

In comparison, the physical characteristics of the glass made by the Pittsburgh process are uniform throughout because both surfaces are cooled at the same rate. And, because cooling is much faster, Pittsburgh glass is tougher.

You can even see the difference without making a knife. Pittsburgh glass has a deeper turquoise tinge. And look along the edges of an ALKAR strip. You’ll see the gentle waviness due to its inherent strength. But you’ll never see strain or stress lines. Our production method guarantees that. Knives made with this glass are more durable with the long lasting cutting edges needed for ribbons and for sections free of artifacts.

Float Process

As specimens vary in hardness and embeddings change with temperature, humidity or age, their cutting properties are also influenced. The angle of the knife is probably the most important cutting parameter in overcoming sectioning problems associated with these changes.

Glass knives can be custom-made to any angle to suit any specimen or embedment. The best angle can be found quickly and economically. The diamond knife with its fixed angle is unable to compete with the versatility of glass, regarding angles.

Sharpness
A diamond cannot compete in sharpness with a freshly fractured glass cutting edge. ALKAR glass knives cut thinner sections, with less distortion than diamond knives on many specimens.

Economy
After sectioning is completed, the glass knife is discarded. No need for tedious cleaning and the constant fear of damage. See Broken Glass Disposal Box in Glass Knife Accessories.

Product number 123-3 PELCO® Glass Knife Boats will still fit on the 8720 Glass Knives but note that 2mm on the right side of the glass knife will not be covered. This area is normally not used and considered the dull area of the knife. The Glass Knife Boat will cover only 6.4mm from left corner, that is equal to 80% of the knife edge to the right.
